A few years back, I presented the opportunity for my readers to send in some of the favorite sayings they had heard over the years. The response I received was impressive. I promised it would not be my last column on sayings. After giving the subject some thought you might want to send in one of your favorites. Take the time and send me an email or note or give me a call. You never know what fond memory you might resurrect for someone.
Years ago my friend, the late Jack Petty, sent in some of his favorites. He said his father used to say somebody 鈥渁cted like a public fool.鈥 Jack related that he asked his father what the difference was between a public fool and a private fool. Jack said all he got was a hard look! Here are a few more of Jack鈥檚 favorites:
鈥淢ore fun than a barrel of monkeys,鈥 鈥淯p a creek without a paddle,鈥 鈥淎 stitch in time saves nine,鈥 and 鈥淪winging for the fence.鈥
Marian Ann (Mrs. Bill) Cothern quoted a favorite of her late mother-in-law, Clara. If there was a spat in the family she would say, 鈥淚f people would only just pass and re-pass鈥 (if people would just try to get along.)
Speaking of 鈥済etting along,鈥 that鈥檚 a saying that is being lost to coming generations. Seems fewer and fewer people know how to get along anymore.
Marion quoted Mrs. Neil Smith as saying, 鈥淎s handy as a pocket on a shirt.鈥
Steve Wilmore, who came up with the idea for this column, collected a few favorites from his late mother, Beatrice.
鈥淎fter being sick at my stomach and throwing up all night, I would hear these words from my mother,鈥 Steve related.
鈥淵ou look like a sick kitten on a hot rock!鈥
鈥淚f I left a job unfinished,鈥 Steve continued, 鈥渟he would say, 鈥楪o back and lick your calf!鈥 鈥
A few more of her favorites:
If someone looked bad, she would say 鈥淭hey look like they have been rode hard and put up wet.鈥
鈥淔ull as a tick on a dog鈥檚 ear.鈥
And how about this one? 鈥淵ou need to turn your wanter down.鈥
Steve said he heard a new one at his brother-in-law鈥檚 house once.
Someone said, 鈥淲ell, drop me in the grease!鈥
Here are a few more that I have heard over the years:
鈥淪licker than a peeled onion,鈥 鈥淒umber than a box of rocks,鈥 and
鈥淯gly as sin,鈥 And how about this one? 鈥淐old as a stepmother鈥檚 kiss.鈥
There are some great sayings from the Bible which are not direct quotes of scripture. Here are a few:
鈥淔rom Dan to Beersheba鈥 (a long way!)
鈥淭his, too, shall pass鈥 (from 鈥淎nd it came to pass.鈥)
鈥淛ust as sure as that coat was Joseph鈥檚 ticket to Egypt!鈥
My grandmother Lena had a favorite that I heard more than a few times. 鈥淏e the job, big or small, do it well or not at all.鈥
A locally famous character in the Watervale Community used to declare, when emphasizing a point, 鈥淗ope I might die!鈥
When I was attending high school, I often heard that someone was 鈥渃ruising for a bruising鈥 or 鈥渁ching for a braking.鈥
And from 鈥渁 Kentucky reader鈥 I received an email which read thusly:
鈥淎 few years ago we had an abundance of squash, so I let my little daughter, who was around ten years old, take a 鈥渕ess鈥 to an elderly neighbor. When my daughter returned, she had this puzzled look on her face and said the neighbor said, 鈥渕uch obliged.鈥 My daughter had never heard this expression of thanks before.鈥
Well, 鈥渕uch obliged鈥 was my late father, Frank McCall鈥檚 way of saying 鈥渢hank you.鈥 I heard him say it hundreds of times. The thought of those two little words, 鈥渕uch obliged鈥 took me back in time and I was warmed by the memory of my father.
There seems to be an abundance of protesters and protesting going on in our country these days. One is prone to ask, 鈥淲ho are these people?鈥 Which reminds me of a saying of my late grandfather, D.T. McCall, brought to my attention recently by my late uncle, John E. McCall:
鈥淧ulling mules can鈥檛 kick!鈥
Much obliged to all those who shared their sayings and memories.
