No new murals will be displayed on historic buildings in 快播视频 after the City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting any new ones from being painted.
In the works since April, the 快播视频 Historic Preservation Commission approved an amendment to the Historic District Design Guidelines regarding the painting of murals on buildings. There were already rules in place, but this went further to prohibit new ones altogether.
Nearly 10 years ago, the Wilson County Business Bureau started a project to place 10 murals across the county, hoping to bring some more tourism to the county. Many other Middle Tennessee cities have murals which draw attention from visitors.
Within that time, 12 murals were painted in the downtown 快播视频 area.
Back in April, 快播视频 Mayor Rick Bell said that although people around town love the murals, it鈥檚 time to cut back to keep from having 鈥渢oo much of a good thing.鈥
The existing guidelines said murals could not be painted on bare brick, and had to be on a building that was already painted.
The ordinance is aimed at the historic districts within the city. These include the Greenlawn Historic District, established in November 2014, consisting of 21 houses of mostly Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival style construction. There鈥檚 also the East Spring Street Historic District, which was established in November 2015, consisting of some of the oldest houses in the city dating back to the 1900s.
Cumberland University Historic Preservation District, established in January 2017, encompasses more than 80 acres and nearly 150 houses of varying architectural styles. In June 2019, the first non-residential historic district, the Square Historic Preservation District, was established, consisting of 15 acres of non-residential property in and near the downtown Square. A majority of the properties recognized as the 快播视频 Commercial Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places are located here.
Finally, in December 2021, 11 houses were established as the West Main Street Historic District.
The City Council unanimously passed the ordinance.
