Seniors across the county who live on fixed incomes now have a better chance of taking advantage of a program which freezes their property tax, preventing it from going up.
During the June 23 meeting, the Wilson County Commission passed a resolution increasing the income limit for property tax freeze eligibility for seniors 65+ from $51,790 to $63,470.
Wilson County officials say this applies for the upcoming 2026 tax year. The current 2025 tax year is still in progress, so residents will be paying taxes based on that year when their bill comes in October. The newly qualifying residents will see their property tax frozen when County Commissioners set the tax rate in June 2026, regardless of a reappraisal or tax hike.
The process to qualify for the tax freeze program can be found on the back of the property tax bill. Any residents interested in applying will need to meet with Dawn Bennett or Lisa Crockett in the Trustee鈥檚 Office, located in the Wilson County Courthouse.
Officials say applicants will need to bring their 2025 tax return, driver鈥檚 license and Social Security and Medicare cards. The information applies to everyone listed on the property deed, verified by the Trustee鈥檚 Office.
After medical expenses are deducted, the gross income and social security benefits will be calculated, and if it鈥檚 less than the new income limit of $63,470, the applicant is approved. Residents will need to reapply each tax year.
鈥淎s always, Wilson County strives to assist our senior adults in any way that we can. Last October, Wilson County received a Certificate of Commitment for becoming an Age-Friendly Community in the AARP network,鈥 Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto said. 鈥淎t the time, Wilson County was one of only two counties in the state to achieve that certification. Our community supports senior adults in many ways, and the property tax freeze is one small way that we can help enhance the quality of life for our seniors.鈥
The resolution increasing the limit was passed unanimously by the County Commission.
鈥淭his resolution would not have been possible without the efforts of the Wilson County Commission, spearheaded by Commissioner Haskell Evans. We sincerely thank our commissioners for all they do for the citizens of Wilson County,鈥 Hutto said.

The Property Tax Freeze Act was adopted by the Tennessee State Legislature in the 2007 tax year with local governments able to participate in. The State Comptroller鈥檚 Office calculated the income limit for each county, but the local legislative body can increase the income limit to reflect the cost of living adjustment for social security recipients.
